Money Money Money

Ron has come back and is giving us a talk on getting money for films.
There are several ways to get money for a film:
-investors
-studios
-grants

Several states also give tax credits, write off and tax breaks!
New Mexico has a deal where they have a fund set up - they will loan you up to $10 Million for 5 years at interest free. You have to jump through several hoops to get to that point though.

In this business, you must create a reputation for yourself in order to establish a financial backer pool. The best way to do this is to network with powerful people. An example of this is to attach a star to the project.

Also, seek sponsorship from people who will benefit from your film.

There are no locks and no sure things in this business until the money is in hand and the film is out the door.

As I am sitting here, I am thinking that I have an idea for a documentary. July 25th I am getting into a 30' RV with 11? Top Cats and driving to Tim Wheelocks wedding in California. Similiar to "Long Way 'Round" , I would like to film the whole damn thing and let it take it's own shape in the editing room. I have a feeling this could work. Luke had talked to me yesterday about his idea of filming it and pitching it to MTV. I am not sure that MTV is the right market for a project like this, but I know there is a market. It lies esp with College Television Stations, Public Access, Bravo TV...
If anything, it would be a great learning experience!!
